Dear Farm Journal,

Since Rufus has started working at the Driftless Cafe and I have started at the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, it seems that Saturday is really our only day to garden together. We got right outside this morning after a quick cup of coffee and started trellising tomatoes, weeding salad mix, adding nutrients to our spinach crop, and pulling out the cucumber beds which have run their course. As we work our way down the salad mix bed, I look up at him and smile, saying, “It is really nice to spend some time gardening together”. I enjoy gardening by myself too, but working with Rufus just makes everything more fun. The tasks are accomplished more quickly, we chat and laugh, and time flies. I am reminded of the days of our initial courtship when gardening was our “date” and I was happy as could be about it. Some of our best conversations were spoken over a bed of lettuce, and I am reminded again of the bond we formed through farming.
