Dear Farm Journal,
British horticulturist, Gertrude Jekyll said, “The lesson I have thoroughly learnt, and wish to pass on to others, is to know the enduring happiness that the love of a garden gives”. Even as my back breaks down from the bodily brutality of solstice farming, Gertrude’s expression is my own. I find myself willing to push through strains, spasms, sunburns, and burnout to know the enduring happiness that the love of a garden gives. I trade my physical strength for mental and emotional wellness, and feel I reap the bargain.
