I took a morning drive to my hometown, stopping at my aunt’s house to borrow some candy molds for making maple candy. The third Driftless Curiosity workshop is this Saturday and we’ll be covering finishing and canning syrup, making confections, and buttoning up the sugar bush at the end of the season. I’d like to get a few practice runs in on the candy making since it’s such a time/temperature sensitive process. I’m sure using an outdoor kitchen setup will present some challenges, but I’m just going to go for it. On my way home, I drove down the “low maintenance” road where my first home once stood. Although I had to turn around, I was pleased to sink into the magical mist of the valley for a quiet morning moment. When I returned to the farm, I was greeted by “Fezy” our resident “driveway Pheasant” who can be spotted almost everyday of the week strutting up Haucke Lane. A morning drive in the Driftless never disappoints.
