Dear Farm Journal,
The time has come to tear down our cucumber walls to make way for a wave of fall spinach. We cut down the mesh entangled in spiny vines and drag it out the door. I had hopes for reusing this trellising, but it’s in such an intricate jumble, I’m uncertain I can ever bring it back into functional order. For the time being, I throw it into a bin. Maybe when the vines die back I’ll be able to disentangle the set of snares. Rufus and I weed, rake, and reshape the beds, plunk the spinach seeds in the ground, and reset the waterline. This conversion marks the last turnover of the season for these beds, and I note the curtain creeping down on summer.
