Rufus and I have been talking about growing mushrooms for a couple of years and today we took a deep dive into shiitake cultivation. John and Cassie helped us inoculate 40 ironwood logs with over 1000 plug spawns. We drilled holes in a diamond pattern, stuck in the little wooden pegs, and hammered them in like a really long (rainy) game of whack-a-mole. Then we smeared on a dab of wax to keep the spawns from drying out and laid them on a pallet to work their mushroom magic. I’m excited to learn this new method of growing one of my favorite foods and really looking forward to shitake shish kabobs come harvest time.
