I stare up into the treetops on a morning hike around the farm and think about their role in agriculture. This week I contacted the Savanna Institute about incorporating agroforestry at Keewaydin. The Savanna Institute is a nonprofit that works with farmers and scientists to lay the groundwork for agroforestry and support the growth of diverse perennial agroecosystems. They have a vision for multifunctional agriculture based on agroforestry systems of integrated trees, crops, and livestock that fosters ecological resilience, climate stability, economic prosperity, and vibrant communities. I’m excited to learn more about their apprenticeship program, perennial farming, and maybe even becoming a demonstration farm one day.
