Dear Farm Journal,

It’s time to tie up all of the “loose ends” around the farm before we leave for the Boundary Waters (or at least as many of them as we can manage). One of those fraying bits is our overtly ignored compost pile. Our compost making has been subpar at best (chocked full of weed seeds just waiting to germinate), hence all the semi loads of Purple Cow we’ve brought in this season. It’s missing a manure component, moisture, aeration, and ultimately a high enough temperature to make all the magic happen. It currently has a forest of giant ragweed growing out the top of it, but we have to start somewhere. Rufus moves bucket loads into the spreader as I drive the tractor and together we turn the pile inside out. The art of creating nutrient rich, weed free soil is a craft worth pursuing, and it’s climbing the priority list for the 2021 season.
