The highlight of my day was a visit from a fellow farmer at Ecker’s Apple Farm. She brought us a half bushel of apples, a jar of honey, and an apple pie. My eyes widened and mouth watered as I surveyed the generous gift box. What a pleasant surprise! We walked around the farm and talked about how our seasons went. Her and I are strangers really. She’s a friend of Rufus’s. Yet we’re connected by this common thread, a livelihood that can create instant solidarity and fellowship. At a time when we’re all missing our communities of kindred spirits, the visit radiated with the sweetness of how a simple act of kindness can bring us together.
